Berkeley Showcases Innovative Welding Automation Solutions And Products At AWS Welding Show 2003 — Booth 1616

Berkeley's Hardware and Software Control Solutions Enable Comprehensive Automation Of Welding Process: Increase Productivity

RICHMOND, Calif., February 19, 2003 - Berkeley Process Control, Inc. (Berkeley) will showcase its innovative welding automation solutions and products at the AWS Welding Show 2003, to be held at Cobo Hall in Detroit Michigan, April 8-10, 2003. Berkeley will demonstrate its automated pipe welding system, which is used to weld sections of pipe together while being linearly traversed and laid on the ocean floor. This demonstration shows, among other benefits, how Berkeley's control technologies have improved performance and throughput by eliminating the need to stop the linear feed of pipe, in order to weld subsequent pipe sections. Demonstrations will be held at Booth 1616 during show hours.

Berkeley innovations. Berkeley's 8-axis MachineWorks® tx system holds all values and parameters under its control with 15 decimal places of accuracy. The integrated controller runs all motion axes, I/Os, recipe scheduling, and operator interface functions. Critical process parameters are parametrically tied to each other to provide consistent weld generation under varying conditions. Users have access to weld parameters and can make on-the-fly adjustments while monitoring the weld puddle remotely.

Designed for harsh environments. In addition to these technical advantages, the pipe welding demonstration also showcases Berkeley's mechanical design innovations which enable simple, modular and easy to service mechanisms, designed specifically for harsh environments.

Berkeley technology solves most difficult problems. "Berkeley's innovative technology delivers comprehensive automation of the welding process, resulting in ease of operation, reduced subjectivity, improved welding process control, and enhanced productivity," said Berkeley Director of Marketing Lenson Wong. "Our solutions have helped revolutionize underwater pipeline welding and have solved some of the most difficult welding challenges facing the nuclear energy industry. We've proven our robust welding automation and control technology has virtually unlimited potential for solving the most difficult problems."

Robust error handling; advanced diagnostics. Berkeley's show equipment demonstration features weld-head hardware designed for a workhorse production machine. Its simple, elegant mechanical design supports reliability and serviceability. The demonstration exhibits Berkeley's automatic seam tracking, robust error handling, and advanced diagnostics.

At the heart of all Berkeley welding solutions is a high performance 64-bit RISC motion-and- machine control system. Berkeley's innovations in control technology have allowed for the marriage between traditional welding controls, and performance process control. This enables such features as automatic weld seam tracking, whereby the welding system teaches itself the relative positions and geometries of the components being welded together, allowing for more consistent and predictable welds while simultaneously improving throughput.
