BERKELEY PROCESS CONTROL TO RECEIVE SOFT-I/O™ PATENT

Patent for Technology a Major Breakthrough in Distributed I/O for Machine Control

RICHMOND, Calif., November 8, 2004-Berkeley Process Control, Inc. announced today that it has received a Notice of Allowance for patent by the United States Patent and Trademark Office for Soft-I/O™ technology. The patented technology involves truly distributed control of discrete and analog devices with a single configurable product. The technology is a key step towards bringing the benefits of this technology to machine builders. Previously, hundreds of specialized I/O modules were required to control various I/O devices in a typical machine with time-intensive labor to assemble and individually wire each device.

"We believe this invention is truly important to revolutionize machine building," said Paul Sagues, President of Berkeley Process Control. "With a single Soft-I/O module, a machine builder is empowered to easily configure and control virtually any I/O device that may interact with a machine."

Soft I/O technology removes the biggest impediment for building lower cost tools. A single Soft I/O product eliminates hundreds of types of modules with one configurable module. The technology not only supports but enhances a distributed control architecture using standard cable interconnections and standard Ethernet hardware.

Persistent and repeated requests for Soft I/O technology from customers have been made for this highly anticipated product. In particular, the semiconductor manufacturing tool OEMs have identified this technology as a major breakthrough to lowering their costs of manufacturing and maintaining the highly complex process tools. "Berkeley Process Control is committed to address these market demands," said Tom Tischner, Director of U.S. Sales for the Company.

Berkeley Process Control, Inc. is a leading provider of flexible automation solutions to the semiconductor, medical, optical fiber and other industries.
